Creation: Vase Series

Day 1: Light

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. (Gen 1:3)

The white upper body pays homage to God's first creation – one so significant that Light is among His very names. Paired with a sandy base and Egyptian-style silhouette, it recalls the salvation God worked in delivering Israel from slavery and His covenant with Abraham.

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? (Psalm 27:1a)

How has God shone His light and worked salvation in your life? 

Day 2: Quiet Waters

And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” (Gen 1:6)

This piece tells the story of a potter working with imperfection. When the clay does not achieve the intended shape, the potter does not discard it, but draws forth unexpected beauty in its simplicity. The shifting light and shadow across its teal surface evoke the quiet waters beside which the Good Shepherd leads His sheep.

Perfectly shaped for still water or fragrant potpourri – find rest beside His quiet waters. 

Day 3: Eat

And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.” (Gen 1:11)

Textured teal grows out of a sandy base, painting a picture of green plants on the earth. Named after God's provision — at Creation and in the wilderness — this piece echoes the words of the angel who woke Elijah: "Arise and eat, for the journey is too great for you." (1 Kings 19:7)

Day 4: Glory

And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. (Gen 1:16)

The elegant shape of this vessel alludes to the miracle at Cana, where Jesus first revealed His glory. Star-like sparkles reflect the words of Psalm 19:1a – The heavens declare the glory of God.

Day 5: Soar

And God said, “Let… birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.” (Gen 1:20)

This classic vase form follows the journey from foundation to flight. Once the Teacher has laid a firm foundation, the rest becomes a breeze.

but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. (Isaiah 40:31)

Wait upon God and soar on eagle's wings. 

Day 6: Immanuel

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. (Gen 1:26)

Deep red speaks of the blood of Immanuel — God with us. Shaped to hold a single stem, this piece is a reminder that even when you feel utterly alone, God is with you.

As you sit with your loneliness, will you see God holding you? 

Day 7: Rest

So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation. (Gen 2:3)

Similar in shape to Soar, Rest reminds us that God completed His work of creation by resting. Pink highlights in the glaze allude to the blood of Christ, through whom we are invited to enter that same rest by faith (Hebrews 4).
